If you travel to a country, it is usually good to know how to get there. Now if you want to visit Hungary in the Eastern part of Central Europe, you will probably doing it by flying and you will probably fly to one of the largest airports in the country. The largest airport is in Budapest, but there are major ones at Debrecen (the second largest city in Hungary, in the Eastern part of the country) and at Sármellék – near Lake Balaton.

The largest airport in Hungary, Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport to be called Ferihegy International Airport until March 2012, so you might find it under that name in some places. The airport is located about 10 miles (16 km) South-East of the center of Budapest, its IATA code is BUD. It receives and sends flights from and to Europe, Asia, North-America and the Middle East.

Liszt Ferenc Airport has got three terminals, Terminal 1, 2A and 2B and a GAT (General Aviation Terminal) for private jets and small airplanes. You can get to the airport by taxi, shuttle service, train or the 200E bus of BKV (Budapest Transportation Company).

As the second largest airport in Hungary, Debrecen International Airport (IATA code: DEB) is located about 3 miles (5 km) from the city center. A large part of its traffic comes from operating charter flights, there are regular or seasonal direct flights from Debrecen to London – Luton, Antalya (Turkey), Monastir (Tunisia), Berlin – Tegel, Eindhoven (Holland), Milano (Italy), Burgasz (Bulgaria) and Dresden (Germany).

Hévíz-Balaton Airport (used to be called Sármellék International Airport) operates scheduled and charter flights as well. The airport’s IATA code is SOB and is also known under the name FlyBalaton Airport or just Balaton Airport due to its proximity to the lake. It is about 0.6 miles (1 km) away from the village of Sarmellek and about 6 miles (10 km) away from the Western end of Lake Balaton.
