The Protestant Great Church or Nagytemplom (in Hungarian) is the religious symbol of the city of Debrecen and it is situated between the Kossuth and Calvin markets, in a beautiful scenic location.

The construction of the Great Protestant Church in Debrecen lasted about 19 years (between 1805-1824). From the architectural point of view, it is made in neo-classical style and impresses by its size and the its well-defined appearance, carefully preserved by the priests and the parishioners who regularly contribute to the renovation and maintenance of it. This makes the church a true architectural masterpiece, a monument in itself.
The Saint Anne’s Cathedral in Debrecen
The Saint Anne’s Church in Debrecen 1993 he was elevated to cathedral, thus recognizing the symbolic and religious value. The most important cultural part of the church is the statue of St. Joseph Calasanctius, the founder of the Piarist Order. The statue is located between two shrines, in a huge frame decorated in Baroque style. Dedicated to St Anne, the church was built in the first instance without having a bell and with one single tower. Subsequently, in 1834 a bell and two twin towers wer added, and was built a new facade, the one that we can see nowadays, with minor adjustments.
The Small Reformed Church of Debrecen
The Small Reformed Church of Debrecen was built in 1726 in Baroque style and renovated in 1870, during which it was restored and the west tower of the church. The first dome of the church was destroyed in a strong storm in 1907, but a new one was built instead of that, keeping the same structure. Over time, the church underwent a number of changes and additions, we now have a totally different look from the original construction. Both the priests who serve here, and the church trustees were cared for relics and artifacts that you can see once you step into the church. Besides the religious importance, the church has a great historical importance to the Hungarian people, so you shouldn’t miss it during your visit in Debrecen.
