Top 5 most popular restaurants in Budapest
When you have walked down the Andrassy Avenue, took pictures of the Heroes’ Square, have admired the all pieces of art in the Museum of Fine Arts and are through with every – or just some – of the must sees of the city, it is time to head to a good restaurant and eat something special.
This short list of the most popular restaurants in Budapest can be great inspiration for any food lover who is or will be in the Hungarian capital. You ca find many wonderful places to eat in the city, but we have picked you those that are most popular among the locals and have great food as well.
Fausto’s Restaurant – the Italian
Fausto’s is an awesome place that is mostly serves Italian food, but also has select international recipes as well as high quality Italian and Hungarian wines. It is a fancy place, not very expensive but not cheap either, perfect for business meetings as well as romantic dinners. The restaurant s near the Budapest Opera House and the Basilica, the easiest way to get there is by the yellow metro line, getting down at the Opera station.
Alabárdos Restaurant – the Medieval
If you want something really special, you have to go eat in Alabárdos, it’s Medieval – but not the least tacky – design is one of its greatest appeals, but the good Hungarian food, the huge cellar with a nice wine selection and the open kitchen are also something… Reservation is necessary and so is formal attire, it’s a really classy place also recommended by Michelin’s Budapest Guide – which really is something!
Café kör – the elegant
In the heart of Budapest, Café kör is a really elegant place for eating with a very colorful and constantly renewing menu, where everyone can find what they like. The food is good, the service is excellent and their prices are reasonable considering that it is a very nice restaurant in a good location, on the Sas street, near Szabadsag ter (Liberty Square). Elegantly decorated, very intimate atmosphere, I really like it and recommend for any occasion.
Gundel Restaurant – the award winning
Founded in 1910, this gem on the Budapest palette won more than 10 different awards since it was opened in 1910. Some say it is the best restaurant in Hungary, it is surely the most famous one with great reviews and ratings. Their menu is very varied and the food is, again, exceptional – Hungarian and international. They have live music and the most well known Hungarian painters’ works hang on the restaurant’s walls, it’s one of the prides of Budapest.
Mokka Restaurant and Café – the chic one
This is again, not a cheap place, perfect though, if you are the food lover who wants to eat at the best places everywhere they travel. Mokka is full of strong points, very attentive staff, the best chocolate pudding ever, great vegetarian food options and so on… Also recommended by Michelin Guide, the restaurant is decorated in an ethno-eclectic style with North African elements.
We can gladly recommend all the above places to anyone visiting Hungary because, although they are not really budget places, but they will surely please you with their food as well as their ambiance or their service. So if you want to go to some fancy place while you stay in Hungary, you will sure not be disappointed by these five. Bon apetit!
